What is a physiotherapist?

Physiotherapist is a medical specialist with higher medical education who is engaged in rehabilitation, preventive healthcare, and education. In Latvia, physiotherapists are educated primarily at the Riga Stradins University, the Faculty of Rehabilitation (established in 1994 as an independent faculty). Also, the specialty of physiotherapy can be studied at the Latvian Sports Pedagogy Academy and the University of Daugavpils.

A consultation by physiotherapist typically involves functional condition evaluation, setting the objectives of the treatment and developing a rehabilitation plan. The patient undergoes careful examination by applying physiotherapy and general physical examination methods – for example, the evaluation of posture and pace, determining the muscle strength and length, evaluation of balance and coordination and other methods required in each particular case.
